Remembrance Day Sunday

posted Nov 13, 2011 11:08 AM by Shanelle Smith

Today the younger children read a book all about war and peace. In The Enemy, a soldier talks about how lonely and scary it is to be in his hole at war. He is fighting an enemy he has never met, but knows to be a beast because his war guide tells him so. When the soldier goes into the enemy’s hole, he finds his enemy’s stuff and is surprised to learn that the enemy is a lot like him!

The soldier wishes that that he could ask the enemy to stop fighting, because if the enemy would stop, then he would stop too. Which soldier will be the first to ask for the fighting to stop?

The youth had a discussion that encompassed war and peace, historic figures working towards peace, capitalism, and who gains power and success - and how privilege often plays a part in this. Wow! With Sunday School only being 40 minutes, this discussion is far from over, as you can imagine.

Making Movies!

We're learning the basic elements of making a movie to send a message! We're learning how to act in front the camera AND behind it
(if you're old enough to go to school, you're old enough to operate the camera!)

Sometimes it's hard to be in front of a camera, how can we support each other? Some of us know about this more than others, how can we teach each other?
We'll continue to use video this year to learn from each other through team building, story telling, drama, and fun!

Messages of Welcome

Today was a beautiful sunny day so we had our last Sunday School class before summer break outside where we had a little picnic for snack, and created a welcoming message for people who were passing our church, and also for our congregation when they left church today!

If you were passing by our church today, you might have seen this message of welcome:

If you were leaving our church today, you would have seen this message of welcome:

Same Sex Blessings

posted Jun 19, 2011 3:42 PM by Shanelle Smith

Alain and Peter's same sex union was blessed yesterday at St. John's and today we talked about it in Sunday School!

Alain came to talk to the children as a guest speaker and answer questions, and then we read "And Tango Makes Three", a true story about gay penguins at the Central Park Zoo who adopt an egg and become the first gay penguin parents at the Zoo.

Since the Pride Parade is coming up, we made a banner to carry on the Anglican float from our Sunday School, letting everyone know that we accept everyone! And we got to use the awesome cupcake mold crayons that we made ourselves a couple of weeks ago!

The youth had a separate discussion about homophobia, same sex blessings in the church, and their thoughts and opinions on the Anglican Church.
